      It’s because when you know where specific marks where the sharks ambush from then any feature that could give away that mark you’ll try to protect. The north Cornish coast is a big place so you could easily fish all day long and catch nothing. Just like any fishing, it’s much more than just luck. 😉👍🏼

    That’s bad angling to use a rod that light you said you don’t want to exhaust the pike but that is exactly what you did just step up rod size still get good fight

    • @HookedGB
      @HookedGB Год назад

      Sadly your comments show your inexperience as an angler. If you think that length of fight is exhausting the fish you have a lot to learn. I wish you well.

      @tomfifoot5252 Год назад

      Been pike fishing 40 years mate think I am experienced enough to make this comment the rod you are using is to light for fish that size you don’t have enough control if it went for snag you risk killing the fish and looks like where your fishing is very snaggy

    • @HookedGB
      @HookedGB Год назад

      @@tomfifoot5252 I’ve been fishing that stretch for over 40 years. I know it very well and where all the snags are. I like to match my gear to my prey. For inexperienced anglers definitely a heavy set up is best but a good well experienced angler doesn’t need a broom handle to pull them in. No sport in that.

    Nice job. Porbeagles are absolutely more persnickety than say a dumb blue shark. Over a dozen times this year alone I had a beagle bite the bait in half or up to the hook, without actually eating the hook itself. Began burying the hook inside the bait by popping out the gills then back into the bait's body so it is completely hidden. 100% hookup rate since I began doing that. Also, I don't know about where you are, but over here I have seen them congregate. 3-4 or more, all acting dumb, coming to the surface, repeatedly biting baits... you could call it an infestation the likes of which you expect from blue sharks. They seem to do this in certain places when the water gets very warm for them. Otherwise they are like you say, solitary, very cautious, will hit and run. They will quite commonly teeth or even 'gum' a fish, even get pulled along for a ride without actually biting down on the fish to rip it.

    Have to say bud, fair enough if you want the extra sport on lighter gear, but I feel that you should factor in the extra stress that puts on the fish and keep them out of the water less time than you appear to have in that video. Not meant to get your back up, each to their own, just food for thought :)

    • @HookedGB
      @HookedGB 2 года назад

      Hi there Dan, thanks for the feedback. What the video doesn’t show is that for the majority of the time the fish was captured it was in the landing net in the water recovering. I think for the next film we should focus more on showing that so our films don’t give the wrong idea. Thanks again for the feedback. Always appreciated. ☺️👍🏼

      I have a 20-100G rod, I have caught 4 pike on it, yet each pike was on a downsized westin crankbait at 15g, one was tiny, another was a jack, and then i caught a possible 8-10lb, I have never got so much as a bite with my larger lures despite having a large and expensive range of any lures you could think of, not entirely sure why, I assume its due to the lack of massive pike in my area hence why when i downsize ill always get bites

    I have this rod and it is my favorite! It has a soft but not too soft action so I use it for jigg fishing and spin fishing (cast weights up to 12g) for perch, pike and zander. I have a Shimano Stradic4+ 1000 with Berkley Fireline 0,08mm braided line with a Berkley Flouro Carbon tip 0,30mm). The only problem is that I miss hooking a few larger zander but it is ok for me. I also have westin and g-loomis rods but use this the most. Another Savage Gear rod I bought but have not tried yet is a 0-5g 6'6"... Biggest fish I have landed on this rod is a 5kg pike. Love Savage Gear!

      Jonny Kavanagh Hi Johnny, I’ve tried various different popping rods like the Shimano Terez and the Hart poppers etc but to be honest I personally couldn’t hand on heart recommend anything other than the Daiwa GT86. For me it is the most comfortable and has the best performance of all the poppers I’ve tried. However if I had to suggest one then take a look at the Ocean Extreme rods. Those are similar in performance to the Daiwa but slightly cheaper. I use one of their lighter rods for blue sharking. I hope that helps but if you have any more questions just let me know. Kind regards. Jay

  • @davidyoung537

    Hi jay, quick question I wonder whether you could help me with ? How do you manage the drag setting on a FS reel as you don’t have the lever drag to precisely set the drag level. As the run develops you tighten the clutch on the spool but how do you know how much drag you have as FS reels can put out a lot of drag ? Thanks

    • @HookedGB
      @HookedGB 5 лет назад

      David Young hi David, for my 6500H fs reel I used a spring scale and found out that each half turn of the drag nut equaled 4lbs Of pressure. Basically I would slacken the drag right off, turn it until the drag just started to bite then attached the spring scale and have a partner steadily pull out the line and on each half turn see what the drag was. Like I say it worked out at 4lbs per half turn. However to be honest when I’m playing a fish it’s all about the feel and would just increase or decrease the drag by half turn increments to just keep a steady pressure on the fish. I hope that helps but if you have any other questions feel free to ask. All the best. Jay. ☺️👍🏼

    • @davidyoung537
      @davidyoung537 5 лет назад

      Thanks Jay, I will have to try it out. When you get a run I find myself twisting the drag up by about 360 degrees so maybe about 4-5 lbs. if my reels are the same a yours. I should give it another 360 and leave 8t alone after that. I think I lost a nice fish last season by tighten the drag during the fight. It’s surprising how much drag FS reels can put out compared to a TLD isn’t it.
